Cascade Canyon Patrol Cabin
Cascade Canyon Patrol Cabin Project
7/17 – 7/25; 8/29-9/4
The Cascade Canyon project will stabilize and rehabilitate the historic patrol cabin. HistoriCorps will repair decorative log crowns with epoxy, reroof the building with cedar shingles and reglaze and repaint windows so that the cabin may continued to be used by the Park Service during the summer season.
Location: The Cascade Canyon Patrol Cabin is located up Cascade Canyon five miles west of Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park. The cabin is only accessible by foot or horse.
Lodging: Lodging is available on-site at the cabin or tent camping. Camping supplies are the responsibility of the participant.
History: The Cascade Canyon Patrol Cabin was constructed in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps as a barn. In 1960, after the original patrol cabin (also constructed by the CCC) was removed, the barn was converted into use as backcountry patrol cabin. The facility is still used by the NPS to house backcountry rangers and trails crews working in Cascade Canyon. The building retains much of its integrity and is a good example of National Park rustic architecture.
Scope of Work: The site, overall, is in good shape and has been well maintained by the NPS. However, seventy-five years of exposure has deteriorated the decorative log-end treatments to the point of necessitating crown replacement. Additional work will include reroofing the building in cedar shingles, replacing deteriorated sill logs, and repairing, as necessary, historic windows.
Dates: July 17 -25 & Aug. 29- Sept. 4
