Dalton Cache
History: Located near Haines, Alaska, the site at Dalton Cache was constructed as a trading post by explorer Jack Dalton in the 1890′s. Hired by Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper of New York, Dalton and several other adventurers set out to establish trading routes throughout the Chilkat region of southern Alaska. Dalton established several trading posts across the trail, providing a means of transport across the Alaska interior. The Dalton Trail was most heavily used in the late 1890′s as a result of a gold rush. However, by the turn of the century, Dalton was off to explore further, establishing trails throughout the interior of Alaska. The Dalton Cache served as an important trading post along the late nineteenth century Alaskan frontier.
Scope of Work and OUTCOME!: Due to heavy snow loads, the roof of the Dalton Cache was failing. HistoriCorps repaired the roof structure by leveling, stabilizing and bracing the roof structure. After stabilizing the interior, the HistoriCorps crews braced the rafters, raised the structure and stabilized the walls. The roof is one of the most important components of any structure, and now that the roof of the Dalton Cache is repaired and stabilized, the structure will remain a historical landmark for years to come.
