HistoriCorps is a program of Colorado Preservation, Inc., funded in part by the US Forest Service.

La Prele Guard Station

Purpose of the Project: HistoriCorps’ objective is to restore the dwelling for continued use as a rental facility available to the recreating public and to make the office building available as a rental facility for larger parties. The dwelling and office have been maintained and remain in good condition, with repairs aiding to the continued integrity of the site listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

la prele houseHistory: The La Prele Guard Station was originally built as a remote ranger station in 1936 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and converted into a work center when the La Prele Ranger District was discontinued in 1956. The USDA Forest Service facility has three contributory historic buildings built from 1937 to 1941. Present at the site are an Office/Dwelling, Dwelling, and Shop/Garage. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994.

Scope of Work: The proposed project at River Springs will involve tile repair in the office bathroom, sink and toilet replacement, stripping and refinishing woodwork in dwelling kitchen, interior repainting of the office bathroom, and replacement of flooring in dwelling kitchen and bathroom.

OUTCOME! During the week of May 24 to May 28, 2010,  the HistoriCorps team constructed two rustic wood entry gates, repaired and refinished the historic woodwork in the dwelling and tiled the bathroom in the dwelling. These repairs will aid in the continued use of the La Prele Guard Station as a facility available for public rental.
