HistoriCorps is a program of Colorado Preservation, Inc., funded in part by the US Forest Service.
Matterhorn Mill
Purpose of the Project: The Matterhorn Mill requires emergency stabilization. HistoriCorps plans to help stabilize and rehabilitate the mill to aid in the ongoing protection of this important historic resource.
History: The Matterhorn Mill is significant for its association with the early twentieth century silver mining industry of the area and as an example of a silver mill demonstrating the froth-flotation process of ore reduction. The site has intact machinery, fifteen levels and is tethered to the San Bernardo Mine across the San Miguel River by tram cables.
Scope of Work: The objective for the Matterhorn Mill is to provide emergency stabilization until a full restoration of the building can be completed. Dirt from the slope above the mill has washed against the structure for years, resulting in decay of the footings of the support columns and siding on the lower level. Hence, the scope of work plans to stabilize the historic walls and columns, construct a temporary structure over the Wilfley Table addition, and coordinate a site clean-up.
OUTCOME! In November 2009, HistoriCorps coordinated and led a three-day site clean-up of collapsed roof and framing materials, stabilization of the remaining historic walls, and the successful construction of a temporary (7-10 year) shelter protecting the exposed western end of the mill. The shelter is sheathed in metal roofing and is 30 x 12 feet, constructed to protect the Wilfley Table.
Plans for summer 2010 include contracting with an earthmoving company to excavate a run-off ditch to parallel the south side of the building. This measure will serve to prevent further deterioration of the timberframe skeleton and exterior wood sheathing.
