HistoriCorps is a program of Colorado Preservation, Inc., funded in part by the US Forest Service.

Saguache Ranger Station

Purpose of the Project: The project at the Saguache Ranger Station will rehabilitate the existing structures for continued use. Vigas and windows have deteriorated and are in need of repair. HistoriCorps hopes repair and rehabilitation of the garage and office will aid the continued eligibility and maintenance of the site.

History: The Saguache Ranger Station was constructed in 1939 to serve as a ranger residence, office and garage. Assisted by the Civilian Conservation Corps, the USFS designed and built this Pueblo-style complex. Currently, the Ranger’s residence and garage are still in use as constructed while the office has been converted to a bunkhouse to serve seasonal USFS employees.

Scope of Work: The one day volunteer-based project involves removing and replacing rotten vigas and scraping and painting windows. A viga on the north elevation of the garage is missing and several vigas on the north elevation of the office are severely deteriorated. Replacement vigas will mimic existing vigas and will aid in the continued eligibility of the site.

In addition to HistoriCorps efforts, the Endangered Places Program of Colorado Preservation, Inc. will be painting several buildings in the town of Saguache, as well clearing vegetation and debris from vacant lots. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work on one or both projects.

OUTCOME! HistoriCorps is excited to report that the Saguache Volunteer Day was a huge success! On October 3rd, 2009 we invited our members and preservation partners from across the state to join us in launching the new HistoriCorps program.  The event included a collaborative effort between HistoriCorps and the Endangered Places Program in the town of Saguache, Colorado. In the course of the day, volunteers successfully painted the facades of five commercial buildings of 4th Street, replaced four rotten vigas, and scraped and painted windows on the historic 1930s Forest Service garage.
