If you’re in or around Bretton Woods, New Hampshire, join us Saturday evening, October 11, 2014 for a presentation on HistoriCorps’ work at the Fabyan Guard Station in White Mountain National Forest, led by Sarah Jordan, Heritage Program Manager and John Rossi, HistoriCorps Project Supervisor. Sarah and John will provide an overview of the restoration project, including the history of the cabin and the challenges encountered and overcome during the restoration work.
Built in 1923 and located on Cherry Mountain Road in the Twin Mountain area, Fabyan Cabin is one of the first built and last remaining log structures of its kind in White Mountain National Forest. The HistoriCorps team completed the restoration for the U.S. Forest Service in July of 2014, engaging 22 volunteers, veterans, and conservation corps youth crews. They reconstructed Fabyan’s stone foundation, replaced sill logs, restored and replaced windows, and repaired the damaged door. The project was designed to teach participants trade skills in historic preservation while instilling an appreciation for our public lands and historic places.
