Program Description
The Assistant Project Supervisor supports the Project Supervisor in the overseeing and execution of HistoriCorps field projects. This position ensures that each project is executed as described in the scope of work and budget detailed in the project agreement. This position is ideal for candidates looking to build upon their previous historic preservation hands-on skills training by growing their project supervisory and leadership experience.
Though scopes of work vary, HistoriCorps projects cover a range of historic structures. Staff will work with volunteers to restore/rehabilitate multiple historic log, stone, adobe, and frame buildings that were originally used as ranger stations, guard stations, cow camps, and miner cabins. The buildings are all located on America’s spectacular public lands (BLM, NPS, USFS, state lands).
Typically, volunteers are with HistoriCorps for five day sessions, camping close to the project sites. HistoriCorps provides its volunteers with three hearty meals a day in exchange for their contributions to the completion of detailed scopes of work.
Position Description
Assistant Project Supervisors are responsible for working with the Project Supervisor to ensure the overall success of each HistoriCorps project. Success is measured by volunteer and partner engagement and satisfaction. A large part of that satisfaction is the ability to complete a defined scope of work and see a productive use of time and resources. The Assistant Project Supervisor will be part of the decision-making process and execution of solutions to project-related challenges encountered in the field. The Assistant Project Supervisor may be asked to independently lead tasks and train volunteers as part of their leadership role.
Duties Include
- Be ready every day to learn and work while promoting a safe and positive learning environment;
- Participate in the preservation, construction, repair, and maintenance of historic structures including the following types of scopes of work:
- Preservation carpentry- stabilization; rough, rustic, and finish carpentry skills; roofing (wood, metal, asphalt, composite); window rehabilitation; coatings and finishes;
- Preservation masonry- mortar matching, repair and/or rebuilding; pointing, patching, sealing, stone/brick stabilization, stone carving, cleaning, and stain or graffiti removal.
- Set an expectation and culture of safety on the project site. Follow all required safety protocols established for the project including but not limited to use of personal PPE such as hard hats, eye and ear protection, and appropriate footwear. Safely operate tools and equipment in compliance with all federal OSHA, state, and local safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to HistoriCorps vehicles, specialized equipment, small power equipment (chainsaws, generators, mixers, drills, saws, torches, pumps, etc.) and hand tools (wrenches, hammers, floats, etc.).
- Work with, provide on-the-job training for, and coordinate tasks for unskilled and semiskilled volunteers and students;
- Maintain clean, safe, and organized worksite using established protocols for location and activity;
- Provide positive customer service and experience to volunteers and HistoriCorps staff;
- Perform other duties as required in the scope of the job and as designated by Project Supervisor;
- Complete any assigned training curriculum, documentation such as daily log, journal, worksheets etc.
- Complete and submit all required employment paperwork such as timesheets, expense reimbursement reports, credit card reports (if issued) in a timely manner
- Strive to complete projects and oversee cleanup to a “leave no trace” standard (other than the preservation work just completed!);
- Assist in the supervision of up to 3 paid crew (most typically 1);
- Assist in the supervision of up to 10 volunteers (most typically 6-8);
- Assist Crew Leader as needed in campsite activities, including kitchen duties;
- Ensure a clean and safe campsite and toilet facilities, and be responsible for the welfare of everyone camping onsite;
- Deliver all project related finance forms such as timesheets, expense reimbursement requests, and credit cards reports (if issued) in a timely manner;
- Complete projects and oversee cleanup to a “leave no trace” standard (other than the preservation work just completed!).
Required Skills and Qualifications
- At least 21 years old with a valid driver’s license and a good driving record;
- Possess strong communication, management, and conflict resolution skills;
- This position requires a level of physical fitness commonly found in the building trades including:
- Ability to lift 75 lbs.
- Ability to work outside in strenuous and challenging weather conditions such as: heat, direct sunlight, high elevation, wind, rain, freezing temperatures, etc.
- Have a minimum of 1800 field hours experience in historic preservation trades gained through either previous HistoriCorps project work or equivalent. Possess a basic proficiency of knowledge of historic building techniques, proper use of hand tools, and the historic building trades. Successful candidates will be assessed based on their previous verifiable work experience;
- Have a working knowledge of, and practical experience with, The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Treatment of Historic Properties;
- Able to live and work in tent camping settings, including remote and/or backcountry locations for extended stretches at a time. Ensure a clean and safe campsite and toilet facilities, and be responsible for the welfare of everyone camping onsite;
