Cyndy Keesler, Threshold to a Legacy
“HistoriCorps volunteering feels like my legacy. I hope that future generations will be able to appreciate the structures I’ve helped preserve and learn the connecting history.”
Cyndy Keesler is a HistoriCorps volunteer, a HistoriClub member, and a monthly donor to HistoriCorps
As I write this reflection, I’m about to be working at Prairie Creek Fish Hatchery for the next two weeks. I have a feeling it’s going to be another adventure.
I found HistoriCorps when a chance opportunity in September 2022 became an exciting commitment. I was supposed to meet a Virginia contra dance friend in Michigan for adventure and “play”. She was working for HistoriCorps, the last session at Point Iroquois Lighthouse. She let me know the project would not be completed in the timeframe allotted and signed up to finish it. She asked “How do you feel about painting a lighthouse?”. My response was “When and where?”.
After completing the project and meeting fabulous staff and partners, I signed up to support HistoriCorps monthly and became a HistoriClub member. I couldn’t wait to see the 2023 projects.
HistoriCorps volunteering feels like my legacy. I hope that future generations will be able to appreciate the structures I’ve helped preserve and learn the connecting history. I’ve gained confidence and skills using historic and power tools, working from scaffolding and climbing on roofs…..AND the difference between shingles and shakes?.
This summer, 2024, I’m working in California. It has given me the chance to explore this vast and diverse state and check off two more national parks. Since I live full time on the road, I am able to sign up in various states as I travel. I’m so lucky to have found HistoriCorps.
UPDATE: Since Cyndy wrote this, she has finished her adventure at Prairie Creek Fish Hatchery! Her report?: “There’s…a threshold at Prairie Creek. I crafted it, with help, but I was so proud of using a couple different saws to make it fit around the outside door trim AND making it lie flat on two different floor levels.” Hooray, Cyndy! Thanks for all of your hard work. It’s a mighty fine looking threshold!
